The church tower is 14th century, and is topped with a much later octagonal spire, probably added in 15th century. The walls at the base are over 6 feet thick. 1n 1771, the spire was rebuilt with the following entry in the Episcopal records "Church very ruinous steeple in particular must be entirely taken down and rebuilt and the body of the church reroofed. The walls also are out of repair estimated cost £1009-15s." This was a very substantial amount is those days ! The Jubilee Memorial Clock was installed in 1887, to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The weights hung in the corner of the tower. In 1947, an electrical clock mechanism was installed. The destiny of the original clock mechanism is not known. As part of the tower restoration in 2001, it was agreed that the clock face at the south be restored ( for many years it had been stored in the church) and the clock renovated. The picture shows the restored clock face back in-situ on the south of the tower. The clock was finally restarted in July 2003 after it was found that in earlier restoration work, the drive shaft feeding one of the two clock faces had been bent by builders standing on it! Installation of a long awaited toilet began in the base of the tower in June 2004, and was completed in August 2005. |
